In November 2014, after being a candidate for the Citizen Council of Podemos, Montero was appointed head of Social Movements and began to lead the cabinet of the leader of Podemos, Pablo Iglesias, at which time she postponed her doctoral thesis project on new methods of educational inclusion to dedicate herself entirely to Podemos. Montero joined Podemos after the elections to the European Parliament in 2014 together with Rafa Mayoral from the Platform of People Affected by Mortgages (PAH). She received a scholarship for Harvard University, but chose to commit herself to politics instead of moving to the United States. She has a bachelor's degree in psychology from the Autonomous University of Madrid, and a master's degree in Educational Psychology. She joined the Communist Youth Union of Spain (UJCE) in 2004. Irene María Montero Gil was born in the Moratalaz neighborhood of Madrid. Since January 2016, Montero has also been an MP for Madrid in the Congress of Deputies, and from February 2017 to January 2020 she was the Spokesperson for the Parliamentary Group Unidos Podemos-En Comú Podem-Galicia en Común in Congress. She is the partner of Pablo Iglesias, one of the founders and former leader of her party. She currently serves as the Minister of Equality of Spain since 13 January 2020. Iglesias then opened up the discussion to questions, where topics ranged from his opinion on the failures and successes of the political transition to the students’ own preferences in Spanish cinema and television.Irene María Montero Gil, MP (born 13 February 1988) is a Spanish politician and psychologist, member of the Podemos party. He also touched upon other themes such as the price of liberty, the differences between political film in Spain and the United States, and the immense importance of film on cultural formation and historical memory. Through a focus on three films, La Vaquilla, Tierra y Libertad, and Soldados de Salomina, Iglesias explained how these examples attempt to depoliticize the topic from an unbiased perspective. He explained how the lack of a concrete political consensus during the period of Spanish democratization created an environment in which the war and the subsequent political transition is not openly discussed in Spanish society. Iglesias began by contextualizing the conflict through the social trauma that still presides in Spanish culture today. Having written about the topic in his book Maquiavelo frente a la gran pantalla (2013), Iglesias is well versed in both the cinematic representation and the sociopolitical ramifications of the conflict. Iglesias’ discussion with the HCAYS students and faculty focused on the role of film in the representation of the Spanish Civil War. Currently, he is a professor at the Universitat Oberta de Catalunya. Iglesias is also well known for his role in founding Podemos, a leading left-wing political party. He served as vice president of the Spanish government and as minister of social rights (2020-21) under President Pedro Sanchez. Iglesias began his political career as a member of the European Parliament in 2015 before representing Madrid for five years as a member of the Spanish Congress of Deputies. Students studying in the Hamilton College Academic Year in Spain (HCAYS) had the opportunity to engage in discussion with Spanish political scientist and former Vice President Pablo Iglesias Turrión in November.
